Head size and position
Chin to crown should be 29-34 mm on the 35x45mm print. That's the part people get wrong most, since it's a narrower range than the US standard.
Digital file (if applying online)
For the online application, HM Passport Office wants a digital photo at least 600x750 pixels, JPEG, between 50 KB and 10 MB.
Common reasons photos get rejected
- White background. UK photos need light grey or cream, plain white is often bounced back.
- Glasses of any kind, banned since 2016.
- Photo older than 1 month for the online application (stricter than most countries' 6-month rule).
- Head tilted or turned even slightly.
Taking the photo at home
- Use a plain light grey or cream sheet or wall behind you, not white.
- Take the photo within the last month, HMPO checks the date more strictly than other countries.
- Remove glasses entirely, don't just tilt them.
- Keep hair away from your eyes and off the top of your head outline.
