Requirements

Canada's Canada Passport requires a printed photo of 50x70 mm with a white background.

  • ✅ Size in millimeter: 50x70 mm
  • ✅ Size in centimeter: 5x7 cm
  • ✅ Size in inches: 2x2.75 Inch
  • ✅ White Background
  • ✅ Neutral expression
  • ✅ No head tilt
  • ✅ No glasses
  • ✅ No heavy makeup

Print at the actual size, 50x70 mm, at a pharmacy, photo shop or copy center. Don't let the printer "fit to page", it will come out the wrong size.

Head size and position

Chin to crown (including hair) needs to be 31-36 mm, measured inside the 50x70mm photo, not the more common 35x45mm size.

Digital file (if applying online)

Canadian passport applications are still paper-and-photo based for most routes, you print and submit physical photos rather than uploading a digital file.

Common reasons photos get rejected

  • Using the standard 35x45mm size. Canada is one of the few countries with its own 50x70mm passport photo size, a generic template will be the wrong shape.
  • Photo taken more than 6 months ago.
  • Shadows or a background that isn't plain white or light coloured.
  • Any accessories that weren't part of a religious requirement.

Taking the photo at home

  1. Confirm you're using the 50x70mm size, not 35x45mm, before printing.
  2. Print at a shop that can produce the exact 50x70mm size. Most passport photo services default to 35x45mm unless you specify Canada.
  3. Use plain white or light-coloured background.
  4. Get two identical prints, Canadian applications generally need two copies.
