Head size and position
31-36 mm chin to crown within the 35x45mm photo, this is the standard biometric size (not the passport's 50x70mm).
Digital file (if applying online)
For online Temporary Resident Visa applications, IRCC accepts a digital photo at least 420x540 pixels, JPEG or PNG, up to 4 MB, with the head filling 70-80% of the frame.
Common reasons photos get rejected
- Confusing this with the Canadian passport photo, which is a different size (50x70mm).
- Background that isn't plain white or light coloured.
- Photo older than 6 months.
- Cropping that leaves the top of the shoulders out of frame, IRCC wants shoulders visible.
Taking the photo at home
- Use the 35x45mm size for a visa, not the passport's 50x70mm.
- Frame the shot to include the top of the shoulders, not just a tight headshot.
- Use a plain white or light-coloured background.
- For online applications, keep the file under 4 MB.
