Requirements
United States's US Passport requires a printed photo of 51x51 mm with a white background.
- ✅ Size in millimeter: 51x51 mm
- ✅ Size in centimeter: 5.08x5.08 cm
- ✅ Size in inches: 2x2 Inch
- ✅ White Background
- ✅ Neutral expression
- ✅ No head tilt
- ✅ No glasses
- ✅ No heavy makeup
Print at the actual size, 51x51 mm, at a pharmacy, photo shop or copy center. Don't let the printer "fit to page", it will come out the wrong size.
Head size and position
Chin to the top of the head should measure 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25-35 mm), which usually works out to 50-69% of the photo's height.
Digital file (if applying online)
If you're renewing online through travel.state.gov, upload a JPG, JPEG or HEIF file, square, between 600x600 and 1200x1200 pixels, 54 KB to 10 MB. DPI doesn't matter for the online upload, only pixel dimensions do.
Common reasons photos get rejected
- Glasses. Not allowed anymore, even prescription ones, unless you have a signed doctor's note.
- Smiling with teeth showing. A slight closed-mouth smile is fine, a big grin isn't.
- Photo older than 6 months.
- Shadows on the face or background from a single overhead light.
Taking the photo at home
- Stand about 3 feet from a plain white or off-white wall, facing it directly.
- Use daylight from a window in front of you rather than an overhead light, it removes shadows.
- Have someone else take the photo from about 5 feet away so the camera doesn't distort your face.
- Keep a neutral expression, both eyes open, mouth closed.
Based on current travel.state.gov passport photo requirements.
